Our Programs
Every economically disadvantaged Washington County child in need of support is eligible for services from Children in Need. On behalf of their children, clients are eligible to visit the center once per month to receive clothing, hygiene items and school supplies, including books.
Client Monthly Visits
On behalf of their children, clients are eligible to visit the Center once a month (all year round) to receive gently used clothing (approximately 3 outfits per child), shoes, coats, hats and gloves, new underclothes, hygiene items, books, and school supplies.
In 2024, Children In Need’s Client Services Program made a profound impact by distributing 197,068 essential items to children and families in Washington County. This vital program experienced a significant 40% increase in enrolled children, reaching a peak of 3,063 children across 1,265 households.
Extended Services
Children In Need, Inc. works closely with school counselors, family liaisons, truant officers, and other community partners to fulfill urgent requests for children in need of essential items. These items—clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, shoes, coats, and even lice shampoo—help children facing economic hardship, homelessness, domestic violence, or other crises stay engaged in school and daily life.
In 2024, through our Extended Services Program, we distributed 12,657 essential items to children across every Washington County Public School, including remote locations like Cascade, Hancock, and Clear Spring. We also supported vital community organizations such as CASA, Inc., Girls, Inc. of Washington County, the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, and the United Way of Washington County, extending our impact beyond the classroom to serve children and families throughout the region.
Back to School Vouchers
In August, CIN gives a voucher to eligible school age children so they can participate in a controlled shopping day. Children are able to purchase a new outfit, shoes, book bag, undergarments, etc. to start a new school year. To qualify for the voucher, parents or guardians of these children must have visited the Center five (5) times during the previous school year (September 1 through May 31).
One Foot Up New Shoe Distribution Event
In the fall, there is an opportunity for each child enrolled in the CIN program to receive a pair of new shoes at the annual new shoe give-away. The child must be present at the event to receive shoes. The Center gives away gently used shoes throughout the year.
Meal Machine
The Meal Machine (WCPS Food & Nutrition) is a mobile meals program that delivers and serves free lunch to anyone 18 and under in geographical locations where 51% or more of the resident children are eligible for the FARM program. Children In Need, Inc. is a certified location that serves breakfast and lunch to children during the summer months.
