Supporting Children in Washington County: Our Programs and Impact

In Washington County, like many other communities in Maryland, families face rising costs of living and growing economic disparities. These challenges force parents to make difficult choices between covering essential expenses like rent, utilities, and medical bills or meeting their children’s basic needs for clothing, school supplies, and hygiene products. At Children In Need, we are committed to bridging this gap and ensuring that every child has the resources they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Our Programs

Client Monthly Visits

Through our Client Services Program, families can visit our center once a month, year-round, to access a wide range of essential items for their children—all at no cost. These include:

  • New underclothes and toiletries
  • School supplies and books
  • Blankets and coats
  • Shoes and gently-used clothing

This program enables families to redirect their limited resources toward other critical expenses, such as rent or utilities. Currently, 92% of the families we serve live at or below the poverty level, while the remaining 8% are classified as ALICE households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). By providing essential items, we help alleviate financial stress, giving families a chance to focus on building a better future.

Extended Services

Our Extended Services Program supports children facing urgent challenges, such as homelessness, domestic violence, fire, or neglect. Each week, we respond to requests for essential items from:

  • EVERY Washington County Public School (WCPS)
  • Nonprofits and emergency agencies
  • Organizations like CASA, Inc., the Hagerstown Police Department, and Bester Community of Hope

These requests often determine whether a child can stay engaged in school and participate in everyday activities. Key partners, including the WCPS Homeless Coordinator and emergency responders, have 24/7 access to our center to ensure children receive immediate support when they need it most.

The Impact of Our Work

Children In Need directly addresses the barriers children face by providing basic necessities that foster confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging. When children have access to clean clothing and hygiene products, they are less likely to face bullying or social stigma. With improved confidence, they are better able to focus, attend school regularly, and actively engage in learning.

By meeting these fundamental needs, our programs help create a welcoming and supportive school experience that contributes to students’ academic success and overall well-being.

Our Mission

At Children In Need, our mission is to make a lasting impact on the lives of disadvantaged children in Washington County. By providing essential items and educational supplies, we aim to remove barriers created by poverty and rising costs, enabling children to thrive academically and improve their quality of life.

Together, we’re empowering children to build a brighter future.
